Another new song for Monday, Ben Folds!

More new music for today! Ben Folds has posted the first track off of his upcoming Album on his Facebook page and elsewhere on the web. The album, due out September 30th, is called "Way to Normal" and the song is "Hiroshima (B B B Benny Hit His Head)." Wasn't blown away by it. Now, if only part of the upcoming U2 album would leak..........

New wilco song!

Wilco premiered a new track, tentatively called "One Wing" over the weekend at Lollapalooza in Chicago. They're playing in Indy tonight and the White River State Park. Maybe I'll catch them the next time through town, or maybe I'll try to hit the Ryan Adams and the Cardinals show at the Murat on Oct. 2nd.

Guinness ice cream!

I got a little crazy in the kitchen last night. My brother told me about a Guinness ice cream he tried to make, but wasn't totally pleased with the results. I think his didn't use any cream, so it was more of a sorbet. With some friends coming in from Chicago this weekend, I thought I'd give it a shot. I adapted my recipe from David Lebovitz's "Perfect Scoop" book and an article in the The Boston Globe online.

I think it turned out pretty good. Creamy, malty, slightly bitter but in a good way. Not too overly rich. We're going to serve it with brownies tonight. Yum!

Here's my recipe:

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup Guinness stout
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder

1. Bring milk and cream to a boil over medium heat. Turn off the heat.
2. Whisk the yolks, sugar, and molasses. Whisk in a few tablespoons of the hot cream mixture, then slowly whisk in the remaining cream in a steady stream, whisking constantly. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan.
3. Stir in remainder of ingredients to the cream mixture. Cook this custard over medium heat, stirring often with a wooden spoon, for 6 to 8 minutes or until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of the spoon. Do not bring to a boil!
4. Strain the mixture into a bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, but preferable overnight.
5. Freeze the custard in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Makes about 1 quart

More Movie Trailers

I don't know why I've been obsessed with movie trailers lately. I've seen 2 movies this whole year. That's probably why these 3 minute "films" are so great for me! You don't need a babysitter to see them!

This have the potential of being much better than "The Order of the Phoenix" which I thought was a terrible movie.

Drive-by cyber insults?

So, your favorite blog, this one, has started to get anonymous political insults in our comments. The first one was comparing the Barack Obama posters that I wrote about to Stalin era communist propaganda posters. This comment came in over the weekend on a post about potty training Parker: "total moonbat family if it actualy exists and is not a pr stunt for nobama" Firstly, learn to spell. Secondly, if you're going to insult us, at least have the decency to leave your name or blog address and not stand behind the anonymity of the web. Thirdly, are you freak'n serious? Yeah, our life and son and family pictures are just an elaborate hoax by the Barack Obama campaign to make America vote for him. Our little 21 hits a day home in cyberspace is part of the elaborate work of his public relations campaign. And he's also a secret muslin working for Al-Qaeda in their attempt to take over the U S of A.

This is why Blogger has comment filters! Get a life, man.

Popcorn fare

Some good movies coming out. Looks like I missed out on "The Incredible Hulk" in the theaters. I can't believe that Bloomington, being a college town, doesn't have a 2nd run theater! Or a decent used bookstore for that matter. These are all from a great site I just discovered, Trailer Addict.

How did I miss the hype for X-Files? Was there any or did it get lost with "The Dark Knight"?
